The title of the work is a play on Sol over Gudhjem, the traditional Bornholm open-faced sandwich named after one of the island’s most iconic fishing towns. While Gudhjem has for generations been a popular tourist destination and home to many artists, Nexø, the island’s second-largest town, has historically had a more raw and industrial identity.

Nexø has long been a centre for fishing and fish processing, and life in the town was deeply shaped by the harbour, its factories, and its working-class culture. As a result, the town’s distinctive character has often stood in the shadow of Bornholm’s more picturesque destinations. With SUN OVER NEXØ, Anne Nowak brings her hometown out of that shadow.

The work symbolically casts sunlight and affectionate attention on a place that has long been overlooked in the story of Bornholm.
