The Sea Grid is a site-specific sculptural installation created in dialogue with Copenhagen’s waterfront, its history, architecture and changing relationship with the sea.

The work responds to the existing grid of the natural stone wall, drawing inspiration from geometric abstraction and the visual language of Piet Mondrian. Reclaimed oak from a former bridge leading to the Copenhagen Opera is combined with Corten steel, bringing fragments of the harbour’s past into its present-day architecture.

The steel was treated with saltwater from Copenhagen Harbour, accelerating its natural rusting process and creating a warm contrast to the weathered oak. A subtle blue surface facing the water establishes a visual connection between the sculpture and the harbour beyond.

Throughout the day, changing sunlight activates the structure, casting shifting shadows across the stone wall. In this way, The Sea Grid is never entirely static, but changes with the light, time of day and the viewer’s position.

The work explores the relationship between material, architecture, light and place, allowing the history and atmosphere of Copenhagen’s waterfront to become an integral part of the sculpture.
